A Wintry Micro-Adventure in the Swiss Alps

In search of pristine snowy landscapes and perfect wind conditions, outdoor photographer Jean-Luc Grossmann and his brother Sylvain embarked on a three-day micro-adventure exploring the imposing San Bernardino Pass with kites and sledges last winter.

Spending time outdoors is a humbling and inspiring experience. From adventurers embarking on daredevil expeditions and mastering significant physical challenges to groups of friends gathered around the warmth of a campfire on a cold night, there are countless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

Winter had finally arrived, and my inner voice screamed for freedom and adventure. It was time to set out again to experience the power and beauty of nature. After four hours of ascent from the north side, we reached the plateau, our legs feeling tired and heavy. About 40 cm of fresh snow had fallen overnight, making our sledges – laden with kites, camping gear, and photographic equipment – difficult to maneuver through the deep snow.

Upon arriving at the pass, a breathtaking backdrop reveals itself. Mighty mountain peaks shine in the morning sun, and the pristine snow glistens like a carpet of millions of ice crystals. We pause to admire the enchanting play of light. Surrounding us is a vast backcountry area that seems perfectly suited for snowkiting. We discover countless hollows and rocky outcrops that can serve as natural obstacles. The landscape seems to smile at us, and we feel the wind of freedom. Once again, I realize that short adventures, even right on our doorstep, can spark a profound happiness.

The next morning, I leave the comforting warmth of my sleeping bag as the first rays of sunshine illuminate the tent. It’s a beautiful day, with blue skies enveloping the snow-dusted mountains. My brother sits on his sledge, a smile on his face and a cup of coffee in hand, looking north – the wind is picking up there. A little later, the kites are ready to go, and we can start our session. Sylvain takes off in no time, gliding up the mountainside and back down at breakneck speed while I prepare my camera. As he jumps and rises almost weightlessly into the air for a brief moment, his cry of joy is immediately carried away by the wind. Clouds rise and dance toward the mountain peaks. The wind whips against my face, and there’s nowhere in the world I would rather be at that moment.

Even though the wintry photographic conditions are anything but easy, working as an outdoor photographer is a thrilling experience. In the evening, after a long and intense day, I tell myself—while my camera is safely tucked away in my backpack—“I love my job; this is what I live for.”

We often take the beauty of nature and its beneficial effects on us for granted. From time to time, it's important to celebrate life and express our gratitude for the natural world we live in.
